Alliance dramaturg Celise Kalke will explore the ins and outs of the role of the dramaturg in play production, literary management, new play development and within an institution. What is a dramaturg? What does s/he do? With whom does s/he do it? How does it get done? This class will have two primary points of focus: the functions of dramaturgy as a theatrical discipline and how dramaturgy relates to the principle of collaboration in the creation of live theatre.

Easily one of the most influential playwrights of all time, Chekhovs work helped to force a change in the modern acting tradition from a presentational to representational style. In place of conventional action Chekhov offers a theatre of mood and a submerged life in the text, where often what is not spoken is as important as what is spoken. This class will be a combination of lecture and demo time through scenes and monologues from Chekhovs four masterworks, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard, and The Three Sisters.
